Renew 10-year-validity Passports
If you are renewing a ten-year-validity passport that expired less than five years ago, please use our mail-in procedures. We strongly encourage you to use this highly efficient method. We use Taiwan registered mail to return the new and old passports to you and it is extremely secure and reliable.
To Renew by Mail:
- Complete application form (DS-82) including social security number and Taiwan contact telephone and address.
- Enclose two 2" x 2" (5cm x 5cm) color passport photos (head size 1" to 1 3/8") with a white background. Photos should be taken within the past 6 months. For details about the photo size, please click here.
- If you have changed your name, include the original or a certified true copy of the court order or marriage certificate. If you are requesting other changes, include all supporting documentation.
- Mail the above items with your current passport, a US$110 local bank draft (Cashier’s Check) (本地銀行的美金匯票 ) payable to "American Institute in Taiwan" with no other amendments or notations (such as "Not Negotiable"), and a stamped (NT$50 postage) self-addressed envelope to the American Citizen Services office with the following Chinese version addresses:

- AIT will use your envelope to return the passport to you via registered mail in approximately 2-3 weeks.
To Renew in Person:
If you must apply in person in Kaohsiung you must make an appointment. Click here to make an appointment in Kaohsiung.
The following items are required:
- Passport
- Completed application form (DS-82) with Taiwan contact number and address
- Two 2" x 2" (5cm x 5cm) color passport photos (head size 1” to 1 3/8”) with a white background, taken within the past 6 months. For details about the photo size, please click here
- US$110 fee, payable by cash (NT$) or with a major credit card.
- If you have changed your name, include the original or a certified true copy of the court order or marriage certificate. If you are requesting other changes, include all supporting documentation.
- A stamped (NT$50 postage) self-addressed envelope
Your passport will be ready in approximately 2-3 weeks and will be sent to you via rregistered mail through the Taiwan post office. Your previous passport will be cancelled and returned to you during your appointment. AIT will not cancel valid visas remaining in the old passport.
If you don't have a self-addressed envelope with NT$ 50 postage, we use a courier service which will return the passport to the address you indicate to them. The courier service will call you before delivering, will require your signature, and will collect a delivery fee of NT$ 170 in cash.
If you have an emergency and need to travel in less than one week, you may apply for a limited validity emergency passport which will be issued while you wait.
Pages cannot be added to emergency passports. In the case of an emergency, if there are no appointments available at the AIT Kaohsiung Branch Office before your scheduled departure, you may call AIT Kaohsiung Branch Office at (07) 238-7744 for an emergency passport. We will attempt to assist you as expeditiously as possible. However, applicants with appointments have priority.
